The size and history of the Bailleul estate make it one of the jewels in the region's crown. Since the 16th century, each era has left its mark on the site without ever altering its original beauty. At its centre, the château, flanked by four square pavilions, boasts dazzling Renaissance architecture with its white stonework. Not far away, a number of outbuildings, now used as holiday homes, look very different. Brick façades topped by wide pitched roofs are a reminder that we are in Normandy. And this contrast, in the middle of an immense park adorned with lines of ancient beech trees opening up to a wide vista, adds to the powerful charm of the place. Stays here will have the flavour of a timeless escape, made all the more delightful by the meticulously decorated interiors, where comfort, colours, materials and objects create a real intimacy.
I already owned a country house nearby and in 2018 I stumbled across this estate, which was for sale at the time. Apart from the château, the outbuildings and grounds were in a state of neglect, but I was immediately attracted by this historic monument and wanted to make it my new home. Over time, I realised its potential, and after a six-year restoration campaign, three of the estate's houses are now available for holidays.
The Renaissance-style Château, set in 50 hectares of parkland, and its chapel have been listed as Historic Monuments since 2010. The estate, with all its buildings, grounds and plantations, as well as the grand perspective, has been listed since 2005. The estate also includes two agricultural estates. The buildings in the grounds, such as the carriage house and tithe barn, date from the 18th and 19th centuries. They feature exceptional wood carvings and lacework, and some of them are now used as holiday homes.
In 1543, Bertrand de Bailleul had this Italian Renaissance-style château built on his land - unusual in the Pays de Caux, not least because of its square layout - and added his name to it. In 1561, he is said to have received Queen Mary Stuart, who was returning to Scotland after the death of Francis II. Originally owned by the Kings of Scotland, the estate covered 4 000 hectares and was the largest in Seine-Maritime. The last descendants of the Marquis de Bailleul sold the estate for the first time in 2010.
A timeless stay in a historic setting where refinement, authenticity and serenity combine to create an exceptional holiday. Isolated in the countryside and cut off from the world, the estate is only 12 kilometres from Fécamp and less than two hours from Paris. Time stands still here. Although it has been restored, it still retains the atmosphere of the great aristocratic houses of yesteryear. For the comfort of our guests, a cook can be provided and a dedicated room can accommodate a therapist, masseur or yoga teacher on request.
