A former 19th-century wine estate
south of Angers in Maine-et-Loire

Our opinion

It seems like a long time since this little hamlet was dedicated to the hard work of viticulture. While the original layout has been preserved with the former manor house and service buildings, renovations have taken the site to new levels. The low-slung outlines of the houses, with their slate roofs and schist walls, give them the reassuring impression of being a home from home. You might imagine dark interiors where long evening fires have left their heady perfumes. But it's not the case at all! The houses are bright and welcoming, combining stone, wood and terracotta in a style that is both country-style and contemporary. A stay here is sure to be happy, rather like this Anjou land, with its powerful character hidden behind the renowned mildness of its climate.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

We wanted to embark on a new adventure. We knew the region very well because our family has lived in the east of Angers for over 10 years. While we were looking around, we fell under the spell of this estate set in the middle of vineyards, close to Angers and ideal for our project of creating charming gites.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

Surrounded by grounds with trees of over 100 years old, the estate consists of several buildings that give the impression that it is a hamlet with space and privacy between the gites and our private space. The buildings were built at the end of the 19th century in 1870, and their architecture is typical of the region: slate, tuffeau stone and schist, giving a certain soul and charm to the whole estate. Le Clos Chevalier has two gites that can accommodate a total of 18 people. They can be rented together or separately.

What is its history ?

The site was originally a vineyard on an estate called "Les Charbotières". This is why there are different buildings, with the manor house, the grape-pickers' house, which was a space dedicated to selling wine, the wine press and the cellar.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

We offer guests a relaxing setting where they can enjoy time with friends or family. The outdoor areas offer a choice of activities to suit all tastes: rest, reading, outdoor games or relaxing by the pool. Hammocks and deckchairs are available for our guests to relax on and let their minds wander under the 100-year-old lime and chestnut trees, while watching the many birds and squirrels.

Places you would personally recommend

Château de Brissac can be reached in less than 30 minutes on foot through the vineyards. "Terra Botanica" for a fun-filled adventure in the world of plants. The Mystery of the Faluns, at the Les Perrières troglodyte site, in Doué-la-Fontaine. In terms of wine, the "Domaine de Bablut" and the "Château d'Avrillé". For restaurants, "Le petit manoir" in Saint-Mélaine, which only cooks seasonal and local produce, is a treat for the taste buds. "La Table de la Bergerie" offers a real taste journey, with food and wine on the menu in an idyllic setting in the heart of vineyards. Béhuard is an island in the Loire, a small town full of character and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Finally, in spring, the must-see "Parc Oriental de Maulévrier", a Japanese garden which, with all its cherry blossom trees in bloom, is a real celebration of colour.
