Accessible via a small winding road that climbs up from Levanto through the wooded hills, La Sosta di Ottone appears on the heights of a small hamlet coiled around a church. From this family home that has now been transformed into a charming hotel, the views plunge over a decor of preserved nature and old houses, down to the sea below which stretches towards the endless horizon. One could almost believe that a magician set out to conjure up everything that holiday makers would expect to find in Italy: the intoxicating scents of vegetation heated by the sun, shaded terraces, the carved stones of century-old houses, the delicacy of traditional cuisine, and the refinement of interiors shimmering with colours. Everything has been designed to make this “Stopover” unforgettable.
In 2002, our family acquired this house which had been our childhood holiday destination. Transforming the house into a six-bedroom boutique hotel was therefore a joint project for the whole family. We are very attached to this setting and this region, and our dream was to share it all with our guests. We remain rooted in local tradition and select the best of the Ligurian region for everyone who stays with us to enjoy.
The building is reminiscent of a quiet country house. It dates from the 16th century and is classified by the "Belle Arti" of Rome. The property is located at the top of a hill, in a medieval village with a spectacular view of the Levanto valley and the sea. Built entirely in stone, it is covered with a terracotta tiled roof, is spread over three floors and has a lovely little garden. All of the bedrooms still feature their original beamed ceilings and shuttered windows. The house is a world where colours and contemporary design collide with historic architecture and atmospheres.
Legend has it that Otto II spent a night at the spot where La Sosta stands today in 988. He was invited by the Zattera family whilst on his way to Rome to be crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire by Pope Gregory V at the age of sixteen. We were enchanted by this story and added “La Sosta” to the property's name, which means “stopover”.
The rhythm and sounds of a medieval village. Sustainability, social impact and the search for the right balance are values that have clearly emerged over the years and help guide the decisions that permanently shape La Sosta di Ottone III's identity. Connected with Liguria and the Cinque Terre which are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, the property is a cultural site representing the harmonious interaction between man and nature and illustrates a traditional way of life over a millennia old. A "day designer" with in-depth local knowledge advises and helps guests to plan their itinerary. Our restaurant offers a gastronomic and oenological experience characteristic of Cinque Terre with cuisine based on local, authentic recipes made with quality local products.
Cinque Terre and its five villages – Monterosso, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Riomaggiore – right at the water's edge with fishing ports sealed off in superb coves. The seven-kilometre hike between Levanto and Monterosso via Punta Mesco where the ruins of the Hermitage Saint-Antoine are located along with an old semaphore. The view from Punta Mesco is extraordinary. The blue paths of the Cinque Terre connect the five villages. It is possible to walk the path in one go with a total duration of around five hours. The village of Framura is a true paradise for lovers of nature, the sea and gastronomy. The Levanto cycle path, built on the old coastal railway route, is approximately five kilometres in length.
