We discovered Flores in the Azores in 2014, whilst searching for a simpler way of life closer to nature. As soon as we arrived, we were captivated by the island’s exceptional beauty: lush natural surroundings, a temperate climate, waterfalls, the ever-present ocean and an unspoilt environment offering a rare quality of life. Beyond its landscapes, we saw an opportunity to become guardians of a rich natural and cultural heritage. What began as a personal project has become a true calling, focused on the preservation and restoration of the landscape. More than ten years on, Flores continues to offer us a daily life filled with beauty, serenity and a connection with nature – a balance that we are keen to share with our guests.
The property stands out due to the harmony it maintains with its surroundings. At its heart there is a fully renovated 1970s residence, spread over three levels, following the natural contours of the land and offering superb views of its gardens, the valley and the Atlantic Ocean. With over 250 m² of living space and 300 m² of terraces and patios, the house naturally extends its living areas outwards. It is situated at the heart of a landscaped estate centred around a spectacular ten-metre high waterfall and volcanic rock formations. Designed as a place for contemplation and rejuvenation, the property encourages guests to slow down, with spaces dedicated to reading, writing, yoga and artistic creation, in a setting where architecture and nature blend together.
This property was built by the German photographer and filmmaker Folkmar Graf. It bears witness to the arrival of artists and travellers in the second half of the 20th century captivated by the island’s untamed beauty and isolation. Having arrived in Flores long before the rise of tourism, Graf devoted part of his life to documenting the island through his photographs and films, which today stand as valuable records of its history. His home embodies a vision of a way of life in harmony with nature, based on simplicity, creativity and contemplation. More than just a residence, it represents rare cultural heritage at the intersection between the island’s history and its rediscovery by those who recognised its exceptional character from the very beginning.
Visitors can explore a 1.2-hectare landscaped sanctuary centred around a waterfall, flower-filled gardens, volcanic formations and panoramic views out over the Atlantic Ocean. Designed as a place to recharge your batteries, the estate invites you to slow down through walking, yoga, reading, writing, photography or contemplation. From the terraces, the sunrises gradually bathe the valley in light, whilst the nights reveal an exceptionally clear sky, free from any light pollution. The air carried by the Atlantic winds, the abundance of water, the waterfalls, the streams and the lush vegetation combine to create an environment of exceptional quality. The house also houses a collection of sacred art from the Himalayas, with works from Bhutan, Tibet and northern India further enhancing the contemplative atmosphere of the place. More than just accommodation, Flores Garden Retreat offers an immersive experience on one of Europe’s most unspoilt islands, where true luxury lies in the silence, nature and the chance to take your time.
Margaça, on the island’s west coast, is a well-preserved natural sanctuary, which our family has developed into a not-for-profit project dedicated to the conservation and restoration of Flores’ landscapes. It provides a better understanding of the rich diversity of the Azores’ flora, fauna and geology, as well as the challenges involved in their conservation. The waterfalls, ancient footpaths and volcanic landscapes invite you to explore the island at a leisurely pace. We recommend exploring the area without a set route, letting yourself be surprised by a scenic viewpoint, a crater lake or a rainbow over the Atlantic. The experience continues at the table with freshly caught fish, cheeses from the Azores and seasonal fruit, all of which take centre stage in the island’s cafés and restaurants.
The villa offers 250 m² of living space spread over two floors, with sweeping views of the gardens and the ocean through large floor-to-ceiling windows. The ground floor includes the living room, dining room, kitchen, an artist's studio and a bathroom. The first floor has two double bedrooms and a bathroom. Over 300 m² of terraces and patios extend the living spaces.
