An 18th-century château set amidst vineyards
near Sancerre in the Loire Valley

Our opinion

Your holiday begins here amidst rolling vineyards that stretch as far as the eye can see around the charming village that has given its name to one of the world's best-known wines: Sancerre. At one with the land around it, the Château de Thauvenay rises majestically above the surrounding trees. It has retained beautiful spaces designed for grand receptions and a multitude of rooms from its sumptuous past to accommodate guests. Wood panelling, herringbone parquet flooring and large windows that open onto the grounds - everything here has been carefully preserved and renovated to enable you to make your projects a reality and at only two hours from the capital.

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

The chateau was an obvious choice because of its exceptional location in the heart of the Sancerre vineyards, on the banks of the Loire, just two hours from Paris. This region combines heritage, unspoilt nature and the art of living, offering a rare balance between accessibility and a change of scenery. Its discreet elegance, three hectares of grounds and its natural dialogue with the Sancerre hillsides all made us want to preserve and extend the chateau's history. Today, the chateau is entirely dedicated to private hospitality events.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The architecture is distinguished by its sober, timeless elegance, typical of the stately homes of the Loire region. Extending over 1 500 m2 and divided into several wings, the château has 24 bedrooms and around 40 rooms, spread out over several levels. A complete renovation carried out over two years and completed in 2023, has preserved the historic features - the slate roof, mouldings, fireplaces, oak parquet flooring - while integrating contemporary equipment. The interior design is deliberately minimalist. The whole complex has a mid-century modernist aesthetic, creating a harmonious dialogue between heritage and modernity.

What is its history ?

Pierre Perrinet de Faugnes completely rebuilt the manor house in 1773, on the site of the original chateau built in the 13th century. The chateau was completely remodelled and its vineyard created in the early 19th century by Jean-Pierre de Montalivet, Minister of the Interior under Napoleon. It was then passed on to his grandson, Arthur de Chabaud-Latour, whose descendants added a new building with turrets to the east in 1898, closing off the courtyard behind the chateau's kitchens. The construction and decoration were entrusted to the architect Louis Parent. In 2016, Georges and Anne de Choulot de Chabaud-Latour sold the estate to the Bollinger group, which integrated it into Maison Langlois-Chateau, crémants de Loire. I became the owner in 2021. A complete renovation, respecting the site's soul, was completed in 2023, enabling the chateau to be opened up to the public in 2024.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

We offer our guests an experience combining comfort, nature and the art of living. The estate has gardens, a 25-metre swimming pool, which is heated in high season and accessible all year round, as well as a sauna and a Nordic bath. We offer tailor-made catering solutions in partnership with local suppliers selected by us, as well as a selection of Sancerre wines from the château's historic vineyards. A concierge service can organise services on request: massages, yoga classes, a photographer, DJ, visits and tastings of Sancerre wines, canoe trips or horse riding.

Places you would personally recommend

"La Tour", a bar and restaurant in Sancerre, offers local, seasonal and organic cuisine as well as a selection of natural wines. In Menetou-Râtel, "Au Bon Laboureur", set in a beautiful house in the heart of the Sancerre vineyards, serves traditional bistro cuisine, accompanied by a remarkable wine list of over 750 wines. In Chavignol, the "Fromagerie Dubois" is well-known for its Chavignol crottins and regional cheeses. Domaine Vacheron, the first biodynamic-certified estate in 2006, is one of the leading references in the Sancerre vineyards.
