A renovated ancient wine press on the heights of
propriano, between Ajaccio and Bonifacio

Our opinion

After a few more years it might have disappeared forever from the landscape. But as fate would have it, the old wine press was given a new lease of life, and with style to boot! Nothing of the old ruins have been hidden. Instead, everything has been enhanced and made a feature. A bold architectural move was made to add the new roof and walls that support it into the old façades, which form a kind of majestic showcase. Perched up high, the building is unobtrusive yet stands out for its singularity. From the outside you would never guess that an elegant, contemporary interior lies within. With its big glass eyes, the house gazes peacefully over the almond fields, scrubland and hills that gently slope towards the clear waters of the Gulf of Valinco, as if nothing could ever disturb its tranquillity again. Corsica will never stop surprising and amazing visitors. To see for yourself, just head to U Mulinu Casanelli!

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

We live in Propriano with our two daughters. I was born and grew up here. My husband grew up a few kilometres away in Sollacaro. Purchasing this ruin surrounded by a hectare of land was a reflection of our connection to our local area and our strong, living attachment to our roots. It has been restored with a great deal of respect for the local heritage, using traditional techniques and environmentally-friendly materials. Every stage of the development was designed to minimise environmental impact, preserve its history and conserve the stone walls that are part of its past. The result is the creation of a contemporary house, where modernity and sustainability meet, while preserving elements from the past.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The house had been derelict since the 1960s. It was in ruins and only the walls were left standing. I always remember it as a majestic presence in the landscape that dominated the hillside. We completely renovated it in 2023, preserving its original structure while stepping up its charm by using raw materials and an elegant, refined decor. We worked with local partners and craftsmen who were at the heart of the project with us. We designed its atypical architecture to reflect the values of a welcoming, warm Corsica which is deeply rooted in the land at the same time.

What is its history ?

It is an ancient wine press that used to be called "Le Moulin Belmondo" by the villagers. We decided to call it U Mulinu Casanelli (Mulinu meaning mill and Casanelli, a combination of our two surnames, Casanova and Pianelli, my maiden name). When I was little, I used to walk past the foot of this hill and admire the wine press ruins. The day I heard it was up for sale, I was overcome with emotion. I remember the exact moment I met my husband's eyes and we decided to give this place a new lease of life together.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

Perched on a hill in the heart of unspoilt nature, at just a few minutes from the sea and the mountains, the house has uninterrupted views of the Gulf of Valinco and the scrubland. It is a haven of peace away from the hustle and bustle, a place where you can completely disconnect and find time for yourself. The setting gives off the impression that you are the only people in the world, yet is just a few minutes from Propriano. We offer our guests a range of services upon request designed to enhance their stay in Corsica: boat reservations, personalised deliveries, exclusive activities, wellness massages, restaurant reservations etc. The house has a gym and a jacuzzi.

Places you would personally recommend

In Propriano, we love ‘L'Epica’ on a street perpendicular to the port. It is a small restaurant dedicated to quality cuisine which is unpretentious, yet prepared with fresh, high quality produce. We love 'Le Lido', set right by the sea. Lulled by the lapping of the water at our feet, where we can enjoy plates or boards of exceptional products, accompanied by a bottle of wine from their cellar of over 150 different choices. When it comes to shopping, the Aux Caprices boutique in Propriano is a must!
