A former Quercy farmhouse on a hilltop
close to Cahors in the south of the Dordogne

Our opinion

Perched on its hillside, this ancient Quercy farmhouse overlooks a magnificent landscape that stretches as far as the horizon. It has retained the group of several buildings from its farming origins, whose stone bodies form a small hamlet that was self-sufficient due to the meagre herds and food crops at their disposal. The centuries have passed and although the old inglenook fireplace, the old sink stone, the bread oven and the old beams that supported the weight of the harvest are still inside, it has now been converted into a comfortable home. When the weather is warm, families and groups of friends can gather under the arbour where the vines grow, by the swimming pool or in the shade of the holm oaks to enjoy the calm of spring, the torpor of summer or the colourful hues of autumn.

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

We were looking for a second home and this property fully met all of our criteria and expectations. Situated at the top of a hill, it enjoys remarkable privacy in an unspoilt, secluded setting. It was exactly what we were looking for. The house needed major renovation work, but we immediately saw its potential. Our desire to transform this place spurred us to move here.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

At the end of a private driveway, the main building is surrounded by its traditional agricultural outbuildings - a barn, workshops and bread oven - and a circular dovecote, a reminder of the estate's agricultural past. Built on two levels, the house has a gabled roof covered with red canal tiles. It is built along the traditional horizontal axis, a perfect illustration of the traditional rural architecture of the Quercy region, with its sober volumes and functional efficiency. The walls are made of carefully matched rubble stone with lime joints. The property extends over several hectares and is enclosed by dry stone walls. It follows the contours of the land and offers views over the open Causse landscape and surrounding valleys. The property was originally a farm, divided into two parts and built around 1920 by two poor farming families who joined forces to build it.

What is its history ?

It retains significant traces of its history, including large stone lintels decorated with engraved crosses. These elements are thought to have come from a former priory nearby, which was dismantled in the early 19th century and whose materials were then reused by the inhabitants to build their houses. We acquired this property in 2003 and then carried out an extensive restoration. The ground floor, once used for animals whose heat naturally warmed the upper levels, has been transformed into a 100 m2 living space.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

Set in seven hectares of grounds, the main feature of this property is its location. Built on a hillside backing onto the Quercy limestone plateaux, its terrace offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape and provides an opportunity to observe wild goats, hares, squirrels and other local fauna. The gardens are laid out in flat areas with gentle slopes around the house. A heated swimming pool brings a touch of water to the centre of this landscape. A country lane for pedestrians, runs alongside the property and leads directly into the woods, providing access to the Causse de Gramat, the largest and wildest of the four Causses of Quercy.

In Bellefont-La Rauze, "Mémé du Quercy", founded half a century ago, is an association of producers of foie gras, confits, fresh truffles and Cahors wine, who have won numerous awards in France's most prestigious competitions. Since 2003, “L'Ô à la Bouche” in Cahors has been serving inventive, seasonal market cuisine made with fresh produce from local producers. The "Bistro de l'Isa" revisits the spirit of the Parisian bistro in a setting of exposed stonework and brick vaults, serving traditional and modern home cooking. Located in the small village of Les Arques, the Musée Zadkine displays works by the artist who settled here in 1934.
