An isolated house on a headland battered by the waves. You will find all of Brittany’s magic here. You have to get a little closer to discover that nothing here is quite like anywhere else. Fort Clohars has retained some unmistakable features from its defensive origins. The square shape, loopholes, cannon and drawbridge at the entrance tell of a military past that lasted until the end of the Second World War. Since then, everything has changed, and the vaulted rooms that once housed weapons and horses now offer every comfort you could hope for. The landscape, which is dominated by the sea, is hypnotically beautiful. "Degemer mat!”
We come from this beautiful region of southern Brittany. We spent our childhood and teenage years here. We knew the fort from having explored all the beaches of Le Pouldu, where our children and grandchildren attended sailing and surfing schools.
Fort Clohars stands on a rocky headland on the west bank of the mouth of the Laïta, opposite the island of Groix. The fort was built in the 18th century according to designs by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, otherwise simply known as Vauban. It is listed in the regional historical and cultural inventory. A drawbridge provides access to all of the vaulted rooms on the ground floor. Now living quarters, they once housed horse stalls, storage areas for weapons, powder and ammunition, as well as rooms where soldiers could eat and sleep.
Fort Clohars was a coastal battery built in 1727, under Louis XV, on the orders of the Duke of Penthièvre, Governor of Brittany, to protect Brittany's ports and estuaries from attacks by the English fleet. The decision to convert the battery into a fort was made in 1830 by the King of France, Louis-Philippe, and completed by Charles-Louis Napoléon Bonaparte, the future Emperor Napoléon III. In early 1944, German troops built two large blockhouses to house large-calibre cannons. A tobruk or a small reinforced concrete bunker was used to scan the southern area of the fort. From September 1944 to May 1945, the fort was home to soldiers of the French Forces of the Interior.
Fort Clohars is located in the centre of 4 000 m² of grounds and has a 180° view of the ocean. It is a privileged, peaceful spot to stay with family or friends in a place steeped in history. There is direct access to the beaches and it is within walking distance of the centre of Le Pouldu village and the port of Bas Pouldu. The GR34 runs alongside the building, making it ideal for coastal walks along the Tro Breizh trail. The fort also has a boules area and garden facing the sea.
