In the maze of narrow streets that make up the Italian capital, Piazza Mattei appears like a paved clearing in a forest or roads, dominated at its centre by a fountain (known as the Turtle Fountain). Among the variation of softly coloured facades surrounding it, the Costaguti palazzo stands out due to its superb porch. It feels like you are returning to a time when art and architecture demonstrated the power and strong taste for beauty of the rich owners. As you cross the hall and climb the steps to the piano nobile you are presented with a succession of surprises and wonders. The apartment is not to be outdone, with its radical decor, alternating between the magnificently restored Renaissance frescoes and painted ceilings and the resolutely contemporary furnishings. The eras intertwine in a spectacular vision while travellers are offered a very high level of service, a privilege they will experience with that unique feeling of having “at last arrived in this capital of the world", as the poet Goethe wrote.
The Palazzo is a historic building dating back to the first half of the 16th century. Built for the noble prelate Costanzo Patrizi, it was sold to the brothers Ascanio and Prospero Costaguti, our ancestors. We are their heirs and still retain ownership of the palazzo and the title of marquis.
The ground floor features a rusticated ashlar portal. The corners of the facades are decorated with rusticated stone blocks extending from the ground to the eaves. In the courtyard, the Costaguti family coat of arms - three pointed lines indicating three stars - is displayed throughout. The interior of the palazzo is richly decorated with original frescoes and masterpieces, including the Chariot of the Sun and Time Discovering Truth, as well as the Chamber of Venus, by Domenichino. A fresco depicting the Allegories of the Months and Seasons by Cavalier d'Arpino, one of Caravaggio's first teachers, can be seen in the main salon.
The Palazzo was built in the first half of the 16th century for Monsignor Costanzo Patrizi, treasurer to Pope Paul III. In 1578, upon his death, the building was sold to Ascanio and Prospero Costaguti, members of a family of Ligurian bankers. At the beginning of the 17th century, the Costaguti family became treasurers to Pope Paul V Borghese, who was responsible for building St Peter's Basilica, and to whom the family's prelate, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Costaguti, was appointed. During this period, Costaguti renovated the building according to a design by Carlo Lambardi (1597-1619). Over the course of the century, Giovanni Battista Giovenale carried out further renovations, which continued when the Costaguti family merged with the Afan De Rivera, a noble family of Spanish-Napolitan origin. Since then, the building has remained the property of the Marquis Afan De Rivera Costaguti.
The top floor houses the Costaguti Experience, offering a museum-like setting.
