Our opinion

You can barely make out the farmhouse from the road, hidden behind the plane trees at the end of the driveway framed by vines and cypresses. Set against the hillside, it seems to seek out the coolness of the woods that dominate the plain. Because this is the land of the South, as the stone, the colour of the rendering, the canal tiles, the low-sloping roofs and their overhanging cornices, the shaded terraces, the swimming pool, the archways and the surrounding vegetation all powerfully remind us. Like the silhouette of a church steeple, the dovecote dominates this complex, which is now dedicated to holidays and events. Completely refurbished, bright and decorated with care, l'Olivète is sure to charm its guests, who can then set off to discover the Cèze valley, a veritable treasure trove of Occitan Provence.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

In 2022, our group of ten friends embarked on a major project that reflects our shared passion for wine-growing and built heritage, with the aim of passing it on to future generations. Situated in the Ardèche valley, this chateau surrounded by vineyards immediately won us over with its charm and, above all, its potential. Our main aim was to revitalise this large building, turning it into a year-round venue for holidays and events, promoting a unique land in harmony with the Cèze valley and enabling the vineyards to cope with the climate change already evident in the Rhône.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The estate is set between vineyards and forests. The estate comprises two buildings: the main house and the former outbuilding, which now house a reception room. Its immediate surroundings are particularly attractive, with a large cypress avenue, a garden that runs alongside the cliff and the forest, and a terrace with an ancient dovecote with glazed tiles, which is truly one of the major assets of its architecture.

What is its history ?

The estate is a living testimony to the winegrowing tradition of the region. This Provençal farmhouse, built in 1819, has seen many generations of winegrowers. In 2022, we took over the reins, with the aim of perpetuating the expertise handed down through the generations. We are working on developing agroforestry because we're lucky enough to have slopes planted with trees and a large wood. We have started planting grass between the rows of vines to provide the soil with nitrogen and minerals and to decompact it. As part of this process, we are converting our vineyards to organic farming, to preserve local biodiversity and produce authentic wines that respect the environment. By adopting sustainable and innovative methods, the estate is reaffirming its determination to contribute to responsible winegrowing. Every day we learn more about the winegrowing trade with humility and perseverance.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

The site offers immediate immersion in a 14-hectare vineyard, part of which is classified under the Côtes du Rhône appellation. In this green setting, you'll find a swimming pool and large 200-year-old plane trees offering shade and poetry. The spirit of a family home permeates the premises, with numerous nods to the estate's past. The rooms are named after trees on the property, and old paintings from the 1920s and 1930s by a former owner adorn the walls. Tastings of our wines, accompanied by gourmet platters and discussions about oenology and viticulture, create special moments with our guests.

Lovers of antiques and second-hand goods will enjoy the "Foire aux antiquités et à la brocante de Barjac" (Barjac antiques and second-hand goods fair), held over the weekends of Easter and 15 August. Aven d'Orgnac, a "Grand site de France", combines a monumental underground cave with the Cité de la Préhistoire, retracing 100 million years of geological formations and millennia of human occupation, from the Palaeolithic to the Neolithic periods.
