The top of the bell tower of the Romanesque church indicates the presence of the few houses making up the village centre. This is one of the most peaceful areas in the Dordogne. The hours pass by slowly under the clear sky. The house exists at its own pace too - the centuries it has gone through without having lost any of its soul. Trumpet vines and wisteria have gradually surrounded it, as if to protect it from the heat or prying eyes. To better discover the house, simply open the wooden gate and follow along the tunnel of greenery that leads to its door. You will immediately receive a warm and colourful welcome, as a multitude of details, objects, furniture and trinkets catch the eye. A whole little world is waiting to be lived in, making you want to stay here forever.
When on a holiday on the Ile de Ré, we went off for a day out to the Dordogne to enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside. As soon as we arrived in Issigeac, we fell under the spell of this magnificent medieval village, which has retained all of its past authenticity. As we wandered through the streets, we stopped in front of an estate agent's window. The estate agent came out and we started talking. He invited us to visit a house in the neighbouring village, and we accepted without thinking, even though we had never even considered buying a property in the Dordogne. On the visit, we fell in love with the village of Conne-de-Labarde and the house, which we agreed to buy there and then! It was love at first sight.
Parts of the house date back to the 16th century. The facades are made out of rendered rubble stone, with ashlar-framed windows sometimes topped by lintel beams and protected by wooden shutters. The roof has two sides covered with canal tiles. Simple and sober, the exterior of the house has retained its original character. Inside, it has preserved the historic features that make old houses look so authentic. Where this wasn’t possible, we opted for an identical design, while adding modern comforts.
The house is situated on a small square in the heart of a village of around 50 inhabitants. It faces a 12th-century Romanesque church which is listed as a Historic Monument. The commune is around 15 kilometres from Bergerac and takes its name from the Conne, a small river which is a tributary of the Dordogne. The village is surrounded by rolling fields and vineyards. The house housed the village grocery shop until the beginning of the 20th century.
A large house full of character, decorated with antiques from local markets. It's a place that immediately gives you a feeling of calm, enabling you to replenish your energy with family and friends in a peaceful, serene environment whatever the season. In good weather by the pool or on one of the shady terraces; in the autumn and winter, in front of the large open fires in the living room and dining room. The nearby Château de la Jaubertie offers our guests the opportunity to take part in the grape harvest. Guests will also have the chance to taste the village winemakers’ wine, "Château des Tours de Verdots" and "Châteaux de Corbia de la Jaubertie", who we have links to.
Paunat, a delightful 14th-century village with its 1000-year-old Benedictine abbey church, is home to "Musique en Sol", whose aim is to promote music in rural areas by organising cultural and musical events. Our favourite restaurants: in Issigeac, "La Brucelière", "l'Atelier", and "La P'tite treille" for lunch after the Sunday market. In Queyssac "Le Bistrot du Presbytère" and in Trémolat "Le Bistrot de la Place" and "Le Vieux Logis". The Cadouin tearoom for its home-made pastries and garden flower cordial. The "Au fil du dropt" heritage cycle ride. Discovery trails in the bastide town of Eymet. Les jardins de l'Imaginaire in Terrasson-Lavilledieu.
