One of the distinctive features of Burgundy architecture that springs to mind is the glazed tiles that cover the roofs. There is nothing like that here. Built in the 19th century by a brick manufacturer who was clearly fascinated by the decorative possibilities offered by this material, the house stands out in the village. Clad entirely in bricks adorned with geometric patterns, laid in different ways from one floor to the next – it was a bold choice, but the result speaks for itself: a sense of elegance and undeniable charm. The appeal of comfort, well-designed spaces and large windows that let in plenty of light further enhance its appeal. Not to mention its ideal location, not far from Chablis and the region’s finest vineyards. The promise of a cheerful and delicious stop-off.
More than any other region near Paris, Burgundy stood out as the obvious choice for us. We were looking for a region steeped in history, where heritage, landscapes and the art of living come together in a harmonious balance. This region offered us everything we’d hoped for: charming villages, vineyards, lush countryside and a vibrant cultural heritage. From the moment we first visited, this brick house with its mosaic patterns captivated us with its unique architecture. Its garden, with its trimmed box trees and little maze, was also an added bonus. Although it is now moving towards a more natural style, inspired by English gardens.
Built of brick, this house is a three-storey building with a ground floor, and is topped by a hipped tiled roof featuring a ridge finial, chimney stacks and a dormer window. The main facade features an elegant mosaic brick design. Inside, the house reveals the refined elegance typical of middle-class homes. A spacious landing leads to the reception rooms, whilst a grand staircase leads to the bedrooms. Parquet flooring, mouldings and period fireplaces create a refined interior, bathed in natural light thanks to the numerous windows that dot the facades.
Built in 1875 by a brick manufacturer, through its facades, the house still reflects all the decorative ingenuity associated with this craft. Patterns, geometric compositions and subtle variations in materials bring the architecture to life and give it a distinctive character. Spanning 185 m² in the heart of a 2,000 m² garden, it retains several reminders of its history: wheel stops at the entrance to the gate, the former cook’s cottage, a small stable and a feed store adjoining the garage. Since acquiring it in 2023, we have been restoring this property step by step, whilst respecting its history, character and original identity.
The house enjoys a superb location, just a few kilometres from Chablis, in the heart of Burgundy, where vineyards, ancient villages and remarkable heritage blend together. It blends in seamlessly with a landscape shaped by fine wines, stone and the passage of centuries. We offer the atmosphere of a lived-in home – simple and welcoming – where you can take the time to relax, away from the conventions of the hotel industry, and feel as though you’re staying with friends.
In the heart of the Chablis vineyards, a former 12th-century watermill is now home to “Au Fil du Zinc”, a fine dining restaurant. "Marguerite de Chablis" showcases the region’s artisanal products and fine wines, which can also be sampled on its terrace. "La Chablisienne", the village’s iconic cooperative winery, offers a great introduction to Chablis wines. Pontigny Abbey, founded in 1114, now combines its Cistercian heritage with ecotourism and a programme of contemporary art. Every Sunday morning, the Chablis market brings the heart of the village to life with an authentic Burgundian atmosphere, where local produce, traditional craftsmanship and organic specialities take centre stage.
