My wife and I were looking for an old fortified farmhouse to restore, set in unspoilt countryside. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by this round fortress, which is almost a thousand years old and which stands guard over the Allier. The chateau seemed frozen in time, as if it had been asleep for two centuries. Each stone told the story of a conversation between nature, water and time. We immediately felt that it was our duty to carry on its legacy, by restoring it with the utmost respect and opening it up to those seeking authenticity and tranquillity. After our life in Paris, the birdsong and the murmur of the river convinced us that we had found the place to call home.
The chateau retains remarkable defensive architecture dating back to its medieval origins. Its circular layout is organised around a double enclosure protecting the upper courtyard, the lower courtyard, the main living quarters and the outbuildings. Spanning nearly 860 m² over four storeys, it is crowned by an imposing oak roof structure built in 1978 under the supervision of an architect from Bâtiments de France. The main courtyard, enclosed by walls, features a well, the remains of the kitchens and an elegant hexagonal tower leading to the watchtower. The arrow slits, which have been converted into mullioned windows, illustrate the fortress’s transformation into a country house. The chateau, its outbuildings and its 13-hectare estate have been listed as historic monuments since 1923.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, the Meauce headland has overlooked the River Allier for millennia. A major place of worship before the Christianisation of the region, it became a powerful fortress of the Lords of Meauce in the 11th century, guarding the river and the Burgundian border. Over the centuries, the chateau has witnessed major historical events, from the Crusades to the Hundred Years’ War, before passing into the hands of prestigious families, including the Monturucs and the Roffignacs. It was remodelled during the Renaissance and again in the 18th century, after which it fell into a slow decline. Discovered in 1944 by the Resistance fighter and filmmaker Jean Devaivre, who began restoring it in 1971, the chateau became part of our history in 2025. We decided to bring it back to life by launching an ambitious restoration project.
Staying at Meauce Castle is a unique experience: the chance to sleep in a round fortress that is almost 1000 years old, on the banks of the Allier, one of Europe’s last great wild rivers. Set in the heart of a Natura 2000 site, the chateau blends into an unspoilt landscape where natural beaches, a jetty, morning mists, herons, kingfishers and sometimes even otters form the backdrop. Here, heritage and nature are inextricably linked. Electric bikes are available to reach the chateau and gardens of Apremont-sur-Allier, which is listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France. Exhibitions, a reading room, the Garden of the Five Senses, a tea room, guided tours and, on request, private chefs round off this retreat where true luxury lies in silence, space and time to oneself.
The Apremont-sur-Allier Flower Park, ranked amongst the most beautiful gardens in France, and the “Marché Saint-Arigle” in La Charité-sur-Loire, where you can discover local produce. The workshops at the Faïencerie Georges in Nevers and the National Centre for Costume and the Performing Arts in Moulins are sure to appeal to lovers of art and heritage. For a more contemporary experience, Street Art City in Lurcy-Lévis is a must-visit. The vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé are renowned for their fine white wines. When it comes to dining out, the “Claude Émile” restaurant in Mornay-sur-Allier and the “Brasserie du Lavoir” in Apremont-sur-Allier are among our favourite places.
The chateau, set in 14 hectares of countryside, hosts seminars for up to 20 participants with accommodation. Three meeting spaces are available: a 70 m² conference room equipped with a Barco system and a video projector, the Maison des Jardins (64 m²), and the chateau’s grand salon (90 m²), which can be arranged to suit your needs. Visitors can enjoy a wide range of on-site activities: electric bikes, exhibitions on biodiversity and the chateau’s restoration, a tea room, a reading room, the Garden of the Five Senses and, on request, guided tours of the estate.
