A 19th-century Renaissance-inspired chateau set in 11 hectares of groundsto the east of Le Mans in the Sarthe department

Our opinion

On the edge of the village and sheltered behind its meticulously tended grounds, the Grange Moreau is a perfect illustration of the fashion of building chateaux in Renaissance, or even medieval style in the 19th century. Its recent renovation, carried out to the highest professional standards, has restored it to its former glory, while incorporating all the requirements of modern comfort. As a result, it has retained all of the features which it was designed for: to welcome friends and family, and now guests, in a refined, comfortable setting in the heart of the Sarthe woodlands, whose tranquil countryside, dotted with meadows, crops and woods, is an invitation to relax and re-energise while being immersed in a land steeped in history.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

Because of the beauty of the chateau, its peaceful, green setting, the countryside just an hour and a half from Paris and the proximity of Brittany, Normandy and the Loire, all regions we particularly like.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

Because of the beauty of the chateau, its peaceful, green setting, the countryside just an hour and a half from Paris and the proximity of Brittany, Normandy and the Loire, all regions we particularly like. The chateau was the first Renaissance-style building to be constructed by the architect Pierre-Félix Delarue in the place of a seigniorial dwelling dating back to the late Middle Ages. It was built in 1842. The rectangular castle features a central forebuilding on the entrance facade, with two polygonal turrets corbelled into the corners. A chapel built in the 19th century bears the date 1846. The outbuildings feature typical mid-17th century decor - cornices, friezes with fluted modillions, a dormer window with a pediment. Approximately 4 hectares in size, the romantic grounds feature artificial meadows, paths, copses and arbours. The grounds are planted with various large tree species (lime, hornbeam, oak), roses and boxwood topiaries. The grounds are bordered by a river and high walls which separate it from the village.

What is its history ?

Records of owners of this estate date back to 1376. The property belonged to Pierre Moreau, Lord of Le Breil, and his son Jean Moreau, Lord of La Grange and Le Breil, members of the illustrious Doucelles family, whose lineage can be traced back to 1076. In the Middle Ages, the Doucelles were a very important family in Maine and Normandy. There have been several famous owners, but it was Marie-Adélaïde Belin des Roches, Marquise de Montesson, who had the château built in 1842. One of her relatives, also Marquise de Montesson, secretly married the Duc d'Orléans in 1773. We acquired the property in 2021, and after renovating it, we wanted to share this precious gem with lovers of history, culture and a certain French art de vivre.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

A veritable landscaped gem set in 11.5 hectares of green space made up of formal gardens, a meadow, a wood and an orchard. The chateau is also surrounded by beautiful green French countryside landscapes, offering outdoor activity opportunities such as hiking and cycling. The swimming pool has been built where the former kitchen garden used to be, providing a charming, picturesque setting. The old walls surrounding it create an intimate, romantic atmosphere. Our guests can enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside while being close to the region's many tourist attractions. We offer home-made breakfasts prepared with local produce.

Places you would personally recommend

Walks in the surrounding area, to meet farmers selling exceptional products. The Saulges caves, the medieval town of Sainte-Suzanne, Sillé-le-Guillaume for its outdoor activities. Gregorian chants at Saint-Pierre de Solesmes Abbey and the Meslay-du-Maine jazz festival. The "Faïenceries d'art de Malicorne", for earth, fire and the talent of master earthenware makers since 1924. La Flèche zoo, founded in 1946. La Chartre-sur-le-Loir, a charming village full of second-hand dealers and antique dealers.
