It is clear that some places are inspiring. Robert de Molesme’s followers made no mistake when they built a monastery here in the 13th century. Of course the island has changed since then, but the landscape around the house is still largely the same, shaped into a succession of smooth hills and covered with tenacious vegetation that goes as far down as the sea? Isn't it the same silence as before that we can hear, lulled by the bells of flocks of sheep? Don't we feel the same powerful, warm air carrying the scents of this land in the open sea? "Son Ru" has had several lives, but it has now become a refuge for a select few who have chosen it due to the intelligent restoration it has had, its elegant simplicity, breathtaking panorama and gentle atmosphere.
The property has been in our family since the mid-1960s, after my father decided to make Deià his main residence. The house was in ruins when he bought it and he spent several years renovating it, all the while commuting between the island and London. It is located outside the village, in Majorca's Serra de Tramuntana, a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of the terraces and irrigation systems built by the Moors between the 10th and 13th centuries.
The house has the typical features of a Mallorcan 'finca', including an olive press room and a very long rectangular space with high ceilings, also known as a 'tafona'. When it was renovated in the 1960s, the aim was to retain as many of the original features as possible, including the courtyard, the inglenook fireplace and the loophole windows. We decorated it with a mix of regional antique furniture collected over the years, which adds to the house’s rustic feel.
Dating back to the 13th century, the property was originally a Cistercian monastery and a missionary school, which is said to have been frequented by the philosopher, mathematician and religious mystic Ramon Llull. After its religious beginnings, it became a farm, or a ‘finca’, growing different types of crops: olives, wheat, grapes and carobs.
An idyllic place to disconnect and feel immerse yourself in nature. Set high up on a hill between Deià and Valldemossa, the house boasts clear views of both the Mediterranean Sea and the Tramuntana mountain range, and is accessed via a long, private track winding through ancient olive groves. You can bask in the sun, have breakfast or enjoy a drink at sunset to the sound of sheep bells ringing on the hillside on the terrace with its sea views or beside the infinity pool. A vine-covered pergola provides welcome shade for daytime dining.

Port des Canonge is a coastal hamlet famous for its pebble beach and red clay cliffs. Hire a boat from Puerto Soller, a 35-minute drive away so you can discover secluded bathing spots and restaurants along the coast, some of which are only accessible from the sea, such as "Sa Foradada". Cala Deia has two fish restaurants, Can Lluc and Ca's Patro March. At Ca N'Antuna, you can enjoy a real Mallorcan meal while taking in the magnificent views of the hilltop village of Fornalutx. The daily fresh food markets, the Mercado del Olivar in Soller and the Mercado de Santa Catalina in Palma, and the weekly markets in Deia and Valldemossa. If our guests prefer to eat at the house, we have a range of local chef contacts.
The two large function rooms can be used for seminars or business meetings. Five double rooms are available on site. Yoga and pilates classes can be arranged on request.
