that hosted painters and artists

Our opinion

In the heart of Giverny, where houses are hidden beneath the greenery, an air of happy holidays floats through this former tithe barn which wraps around a courtyard well and backs onto a large park. The layout of the buildings, the long tiled roofs and the half-timbered walls form a harmonious ensemble bordered by lawns, hedges and large trees. During a weekend or a longer stay, guests will gladly allow themselves to be imbued with the still vibrant memory of the personalities who made this place famous, all the while experiencing the delights of a warm retreat on the banks of the Seine.

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

For the quiet and a natural environment just an hour from Paris.. We already had experience with running a guest house in the countryside, near Giverny. We fell in love with La Dîme and the Impressionists' village and settled here in 2014.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

La Dîme is made up of a set of stone buildings arranged in a U-shape around a courtyard with a well at the centre. The oldest part, which dates back to the 13th century, is the old tithe barn. It is a large building with large volumes and exposed beams. A large square tower with a glass roof was added at the beginning of the 20th century.

What is its history ?

Until 1789 the Church received the “disme”, a levy which was set at the rate of one tenth of the animal and vegetable production of the farms and smallholdings. During the 13th century in Giverny, the secular clergy of the Saint-Ouen de Rouen abbey collected taxes here in this tithe barn which was run by monks. The Revolution put an end to this ancient practice and La Dîme was then transformed into a farmhouse. At the beginning of the 20th century, the building was acquired by the Etablissements Féron, nurserymen, gardeners and horticulturalists who transformed this rustic farm into a spacious family home. In the early 1920s, the house was owned by Teddy Toulgouat, son-in-law of Theodore Earl Butler (American impressionist painter who married two of Monet's daughters-in-law - Suzanne Hoschedé and, after her death, her younger sister Marthe). With his wife Lilly, Teddy hosted not only painters, but also artists of the time. Louis Aragon then lived here for a while with his friend Nancy Cunard in May of 1923. Michel Leiris and Isadora Duncan were also among the visitors to the property. From the 1990s and for more than twenty years, La Dîme remained uninhabited and at the mercy of the elements. We bought the property in 2014 and, after extensive work, we transformed it into a guest house and reception hall.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

Located in the heart of Giverny, very close to the Claude Monet Foundation and the Impressionism Museum, we welcome our guests into a preserved residence which is quiet and removed from busy tourist spots. The one hectare garden is planted with fruit trees and extends to the main street of the village where the famous painter lived. We have respected and accentuated the property's original structures and contrasts. Refined simplicity has been favoured, a nod to continuing a particular art of living in the present day. Giverny's historic tithe barn, now part of the estate, has been converted into a restaurant, ‘La Table’, which is open every weekend from October to March and also offers a Sunday brunch by the fire in winter. ‘Les Terrasses’, an outdoor restaurant on the heights of the park, is open from April to September and offers brunch on the last Sunday of each month.

In Giverny, hikes on its hillsides and the ‘Ferme de Giverny’ for the local cider. La Roche-Guyon for its castle. Les Andelys for its remarkable landscape with the Lyons forest, its village, its eponymous crêperie and its small museum dedicated to Nicolas Poussin. The Auberge du prieuré normand in Gasny for its cuisine. The Vernon market every Saturday morning. Giverny is located on the Seine cycle route, a 520 km itinerary linking Paris to Honfleur, Deauville and Le Havre.
