A 1920s house overlooking the ocean
in Anglet, between Bayonne and Biarritz

Our opinion

1920's seaside architecture and a minimalist spirit combine here in a resolutely contemporary setting. Furniture and works of art, some of them colourful, punctuate the immaculate white décor, which is highlighted by the black metal frames, creating an atmosphere that is both soothing and luminous. When the weather is good, you'll be tempted to sit outside on the balconies and terraces or under the shade of the arbour and the garden, gazing out over the ocean. In the heart of the city but sheltered in a no-through road, you can easily alternate between enjoying hours of peace and quiet in this unique refuge and cultural or sporting outings to discover the Basque Country. There is so much on offer here!

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

I moved here for family reasons: my grandchildren were growing up, and I wanted a place where they could come into their own. This region was a natural choice: sublime, tranquil beaches, an inland brimming with life, a wide range of sporting activities and nature everywhere. It is a rich, cultivated, gourmet region, where you can live outdoors, learn, breathe and pass knowledge on. You can enjoy a rare art of living here which is both simple and precious.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

Built in the 1920s, this unique house overlooks the Atlantic with an over 190° panoramic view. Completely refurbished in 2018 by the architect William Marcel, heir to a renowned family in the Basque country, it combines the sober elegance of seaside villas with a contemporary minimalist aesthetic: white façades, black joinery, monumental windows, generous volumes and remarkable ceiling heights. Its slender shape, almost like a look-out post, gives it a unique presence, open to the light and the horizon from every floor.

What is its history ?

An English admiral, who fell under the spell of the Atlantic, wanted and designed this house as a refuge facing the sea. His chef would come from time to time, and he cultivated a remarkable vegetable garden, taking advantage of the fertile soil and very wet climate at the time. The orchard was home to a multitude of ancient varieties of apple trees, testifying to a simple yet refined way of life. Situated in a peaceful no-through road surrounded by eight 1930s Basque villas, this property combines absolute tranquillity with exceptional accessibility: it is just five minutes from the beaches and the city centre, and only ten minutes from the train station or airport.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

A villa with breath-taking views, furnished with renowned vintage furniture and lighting from the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. It is a rare interlude between elegance and relaxation, in one of Biarritz's most unspoilt and inspiring locations. The property offers absolute peace and quiet in a flower-filled no-through road, just a stone's throw from the hustle and bustle of the city, beaches and golf courses. Guests will enjoy an environment that is conducive to both relaxation and adventure. You can go horse riding, surfing, golf, tree climbing, visit exhibitions, listen to concerts on the beach. Everything here will make your stay a rich experience, enveloped in the light of the Atlantic and the gentle Basque way of life.

Places you would personally recommend

A few rare finds, only a little way from the house: "La Plancha" in Bidart for lunch overlooking the ocean, "Chez Albert" in Biarritz port for its ultra-fresh fish. The little museum in Guéthary, created in an early 20th century neo-Basque house, the Villa Saraleguinea, which houses a donation from the sculptor Georges Clément de Swiecinski. "Les Jardins du Refuge" has been perpetuating the tradition of market gardening in Anglet on 25 hectares of land since 1839: direct sales of vegetables, eggs and poultry from a social and solidarity project run by the sisters of the "Congrégation des Servantes de Marie". Take a stroll through the Forêt du Pignada and its less-frequented paths to observe the local flora and fauna.
