An 18th-century chateau and its 4-hectare grounds
in Milon-la-Chapelle, in the Chevreuse Valley

Our opinion

From the narrow road that runs through the village, the chateau comes into view behind the gates flanked by hedges trimmed into topiary shapes. Its yellow-plastered facades contrast harmoniously with the roofs, which alternate between slate and tiles, no doubt reflecting the different periods of construction and extension. The elegance of the impeccably maintained grounds foreshadows that of the interior décor, where every detail and every piece of furniture has been meticulously considered and chosen. The perfectly restored original decorative features now complement contemporary elements, linking different eras and styles in a profusion of materials and colours. Just a few kilometres from Paris, in a setting that combines the charms of the countryside with the elegance of the Grand Siècle, guests are guaranteed a complete change of scenery.

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

Back in the 1980s, we happened to walk past the property in the middle of winter. It wasn’t for sale, but we were immediately struck by the light, its aspect and unobstructed views – on one side over the French-style gardens, and on the other over the lake. A secluded spot where the art of living seems to blend seamlessly with nature. We also fell in love with Milon-la-Chapelle, a well-preserved and charming village situated just 30 kilometres from Paris, in the heart of the Haute Vallée de Chevreuse Regional Nature Park.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The 18th-century chateau stands in the heart of a four-hectare landscaped estate. It is complemented by two outbuildings. Behind its majestic facade, the 800 m² chateau exudes the charm of a historic residence, reimagined to offer contemporary comfort. The main house, redesigned by an interior designer, boasts spacious rooms and elegant reception areas. The 18th-century drawing room, adorned with period wood panelling and a Versailles-style parquet floor, embodies the spirit of the house. The dining rooms include, in particular, a spectacular room enhanced by a 17th-century Portuguese ceiling and an original Burgundy stone floor.

What is its history ?

The chateau is said to have been built in the early 17th century for the Besset family, who were then the lords of Milon. In 1764, it was acquired by Baron Jean de Kalb, an officer of German origin who fought in the American War of Independence alongside the Marquis de La Fayette. Through marriage, the estate then passed to his son-in-law, Count Raymond d’Abzac, who became deeply involved in local life as the village mayor. A former equerry to Charles X, he transformed the estate following the Revolution of 1830 and, in particular, established a stud farm there, thereby imbuing the place with a strong aristocratic and equestrian character. Preserved by the d’Abzac family for nearly two centuries, the chateau was finally purchased by us in 1985 from their descendants.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

The property offers a timeless retreat just 30 kilometres from Paris, in the heart of a well-preserved village in the Upper Chevreuse Valley. It’s the perfect place to unwind for a few days, get together with family and friends, celebrate a special occasion or organise a small seminar. Our guests particularly enjoy meals under the centuries-old trees, afternoons by the infinity pool and winter evenings gathered round the large fireplaces. A Steinway piano is available in the main lounge and, on request, we can arrange for musicians to come and provide entertainment during a dinner or an evening’s gathering. In the attic, a reading room, a small private theatre and a multi-purpose hall host conferences, creative workshops and yoga sessions. Two members of the household staff discreetly ensure guests’ comfort. Breakfasts, meals, a chauffeur and personalised services can be arranged on request.

Places you would personally recommend

The Domaine de Dampierre hosts temporary exhibitions and a music festival in the summer. Foodies will enjoy “Le 17” in Dampierre, a wine bar and concert venue, as well as “Le Jardin Sucré”, the famous patisserie run by Mélanie and Arnaud Mathez, French macaron champions. When it comes to fine dining, “Le Bistrot du 11”, the little brother of “La Table du 11” – a Michelin-starred restaurant – is a must-visit establishment where culinary excellence is expressed with simplicity. Brunch at the Abbey of Vaux-de-Cernay is a culinary treat to be savoured in an exceptional setting. The concerts at Port-Royal des Champs Abbey and the markets in Saint-Rémy-lès-Chevreuse and Gif-sur-Yvette round off the way of life in the Chevreuse Valley.
