Reinterpretation of a place is a perilous exercise if you want to preserve its original soul. The renovation of this former industrial laundry, which was clearly marked by the desire to bring it up to date, struck the right balance by subtly evoking its past. The graphic lines of the architecture, the omnipresent whiteness and the sobriety of the decor all help to create a refined atmosphere that is reminiscent of the immaculate sheets that used to be worked on here. It's so calm now that it's hard to imagine the hundreds of workers who used to be at work here. Whether you want to relax or work, in a small group or a large one, whatever your project, everything has been designed to make it a success, away from the hustle and bustle.
The property has been in my family for several generations. It is a former laundry, located in Mayenne, a region that has been home to weavers since the 12th century, thanks to the local cultivation of hemp. This "white fabric factory" had always been right in front of our eyes and seemed almost doomed to abandonment, which was sad considering its incredible history. Faced with its deterioration, we decided to restore it with the aim of preserving this family history and heritage. So we embarked on a great adventure, motivated by our attachment to the place and with the sincere desire to safeguard a page in the region's history.
The complex comprises three buildings in a simple rectangular shape, topped by sprocket gable roofs. The aim was to preserve the identity of the site throughout the renovation. We preserved the architectural language and details linked to its history, in particular the white bands around the windows and doors, which reflect the standard width of textiles at the time. We also preserved some emblematic features such as the bell in the laundry and the large 3.7-tonne marble table in the dining room. We prioritised reusing materials. In the bedrooms, the bed backs are made from old rafters, beams and joists from the site.
In the 18th century, the linen-based textile industry was booming in Laval. Jean René Pierre Leclerc de la Jubertière left his mark on this era. In 1768, at a place called "La Mazure", bordered by the river Jouanne, whose waters were reputed to be "soft and soapy", he set up an establishment dedicated to bleaching cloth, a key process that revolutionised the trade. The site was recognised as "the most beautiful laundry in the kingdom" and exported its fabric production to Spain, Holland and even the United States. From the 1800s, cotton produced in America by slaves arrived in France at a lower price. From then on, the whole industrial sector collapsed and the laundry closed in 1811. After its bankruptcy, the building survived for two centuries without any maintenance. In 2021, we launched a complete restoration, which was completed in September 2025. We won the “Historic European Houses” award in 2025, jointly sponsored by PB and the Rothschild & Co. group.
