Normandy in Seine-et-Marne! This is the surprise offered by the Villa des Fées, whose architecture combines all the hallmarks of the Anglo-Norman villas that were all the rage in the late 19th century and early 20th: half-timbering, light-coloured render, small-paned windows, and roofs with intricate lines and steep pitches. The immaculately maintained grounds, with their variety of deciduous trees, tennis court and swimming pool, also contribute to this atmosphere that would not be out of place for a Briton, for whom a garden is a true living space. It is therefore no surprise to find, inside, a carefully crafted atmosphere inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, which emerged in the United Kingdom in parallel with Art Nouveau on the continent. The craftsmanship of the artisans is celebrated here through the pursuit of perfection in every detail, with a consistent theme of celebrating nature, enhanced by a whole range of fabrics featuring colourful botanical patterns. Just an hour from Paris, a complete change of scenery awaits.
La Villa des Fées was acquired by my great-grandparents. Built in 1900 by a wealthy American woman, it fulfilled a unique ambition: to host artists in residence, in the spirit of that pivotal period between Impressionism and modernity. Painters, sculptors and musicians stayed here, sometimes for long periods, finding it a place conducive to creativity. Charmed by this atmosphere, my ancestors—industrial millers—first rented it before becoming permanently attached to it. From this legacy sprang a loyalty to the place that continues to this day.
The property features Anglo-Norman-inspired architecture, recognisable by its dark green half-timbering against a light background. Adjacent to the house is a vast artist’s studio, notable for its tall bay windows and generous proportions, once designed to capture light and foster creativity. The complex reflects the original vision of its founder, who sought to create a dialogue between life and art. Inside, the Arts and Crafts influence is evident in the wood panelling, wall hangings and ceramics in a variety of shades. The house, with its interlocking levels and multiple roofs, creates an open and unexpected space. The restoration work carried out has preserved its spirit, simply softening the tones.
From 1900 until its acquisition by my great-grandparents in 1907, the house pulsed with the rhythm of a vibrant artistic life. Since then, our family has been committed to preserving its spirit, making this unique place our holiday retreat. Built in the 1920s for my grandfather, a swimming champion, the swimming pool long accompanied his training sessions. Today, shared between seven heirs, the property is being made available for rental for the first time.
The atmosphere evokes a refined “Parisian countryside”, where the good life comes naturally. In the heart of a village, near Fontainebleau and the Impressionist landscapes, the house, surrounded by five hectares of grounds, opens onto a preserved environment, crossed by the River Loing. The estate is organised around a garden, a permaculture vegetable patch, a swimming pool and terraces perfect for shared moments. Hospitality is based on attentive care: a live-in housekeeper, assisted by a gardener and a steward, ensure your stay runs smoothly. The family home is equally suited to intimate getaways, family reunions and celebrations.
In Bourron-Marlotte, local life revolves around a few select venues. “Les Prémices” offers refined gourmet dining, whilst “Le Bistrot du Broc” embodies the spirit of an authentic French bistro. “La Papote” charms with its terrace set amidst the woods. In summer, the bar at Bourron Castle offers a perfect setting for a drink at the end of the day. The village, lively yet unassuming, hosts a weekly market every Saturday morning. Nearby, the Château de Fontainebleau and its 17,000-hectare national forest, the villages of the Loing region—including Montigny-sur-Loing and Moret-sur-Loing—as well as Barbizon, make up a rich area, blending Impressionist heritage, nature and a relaxed way of life.
Set within five hectares of grounds, the house features gardens, terraces and elegant lounges, accommodating between 30 and 600 guests depending on the chosen configuration. It has seven bedrooms.
