The acquisition of a hotel and restaurant in a chateau shows our strong commitment to safeguarding our historical and cultural heritage. We wanted to preserve and enhance a monument that embodies the history, architecture and traditions of our region. This chateau is a witness to the past that deserves to be passed on to future generations. Through its upkeep and by opening it up to the public, we hope to offer a place to meet, share and discover, while contributing to its conservation. Every stone and room in the château has a story behind it, and our aim is to bring this to light while offering quality services in an exceptional setting.
A former fortified castle and a royal residence, the building dates back to the 15th century and was enhanced in the 18th and 20th centuries. This defensive stronghold has preserved its 18th-century keep and chapel, as well as a courtyard with an Italian Renaissance portico. The building is made of tufa stone and the roofs are slate. The facades are framed by circular towers, one of which has a corbel base supporting a stone hourd. The facade openings are completed with cross-shaped stone mullions. The attic floor is flooded with light that streams in through wooden dormer windows with triangular pediments. The main gate is flanked by a caretaker's cottage. A driveway leads up several levels of the terraced garden to the château. The plot overlooking the château includes a garden with swimming pool and terraces. A wooded park occupies the plot to the north and east.
This former fortified castle was built under Charles VII for the French treasurer Pierre Bérard, husband of Anne de Ronsard. Charles VII and Louis XI stayed here, as attested by numerous royal deeds. Established as a seigneury in January 1444, Chissay passed from noble hand to noble hand until the Saint-Genix de Beauregard family sold it in 1952. It was at the Château de Chissay that Paul Reynaud, head of the government, set up his headquarters in June 1940. In the great hall, conferences were held between the political leaders, the London ambassador and the military leaders, including General Weygand, the supreme commander. General de Gaulle arrived at the château on 12 June to meet the President of the Council. When, against his advice, it was decided that the government would be transferred to Bordeaux, de Gaulle flew from Chissay to London on 17 June. The following day, he made his historic appeal to the French people. The château was converted into a hotel in 1986.
The walls of the fortress still carry the whispers of French history. The hotel is located in the Cher valley, in a natural area of ecological, fauna and flora interest (ZNIEFF). The region is rich in history, including the famous neighbouring châteaux of Amboise and Chenonceau. The 30-bedroom château hotel is set in lush greenery with its park and the surrounding woods, and boasts a heated swimming pool, providing a friendly setting for a relaxing break.
At the Clos Roussely estate, on nine hectares, eight grape varieties are grown biodynamically, a method that takes account of the natural rhythms of the climate with respect and humility. A tour of the vineyards, cellars and winery ends with a tasting session. For adventurers eager to discover new things, our partner "Aventure Canoë" offers canoe trips, where every stroke of the paddle brings you closer to the magic of the Loire. The Cher cycle route: the green Cœur de France cycle route (Véloroute No. 46) follows the banks of the Cher Valley and the Berry Canal. Every evening from Tuesday to Saturday, our "Table du Roy" restaurant serves traditional seasonal cuisine using local produce.
The Château de Chissay has a number of function rooms ranging in size from 25 to 250m2, and accommodating from 20 to 180 guests. The hotel has 30 rooms, a 13th-century chapel and an outdoor swimming pool. The site can be rented out in its entirety.
