Our opinion

Straying from the norm, La Colonie (whose name comes from the former purpose of its walls) is far from a typical guesthouse. No meticulously preened garden and no floral curtains. The old stones welcome you into a more rugged, yet comfortable world with a mix of styles. The scatter of vintage objects and contemporary art distills the 1500 square metres house with an utterly unique charm. Its owner roamed the country, opening a string of restaurants before he finally unpacked his bags and memories in the heart of this rustic and natural wilderness that surrounds the property. A collection of mismatched wooden tables and traces of the former holiday camp can still be found in some of the rooms. This miraculously resurrected haven is the perfect place to share a slice of life and nature.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

For the magnificent Aubrac plateau which stretches from Occitanie to Auvergne and sits 1350 metres above sea level.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The old hotel was built using stones from the former monastery of Aubrac which dated back to the 12th century. Aubrac’s cultural heritage consists of seven old hotels, a church and a tower known as "La tour des Anlgais".

What is its history ?

The old hotel, built in 1895, was first transformed into a summer camp. It has now been revived as a guesthouse.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

A unique experience that shares our passions and our country. Our guests are given the opportunity to enjoy our house, feast at our guest table, taste our family champagne (Chauvet founded in 1848 in Tours Sur Marne) and admire contemporary photographic works and art books. A garden with lounge chairs and tables is also available for our guests as well as a wine and champagne bar and a shop. We also encourage them to explore the surrounding paths and mountain trails where Aubrac almost transcends reality with its stunning plateaus and light.

Places you would personally recommend

There is no lack of places to visit nearby, Michel et Sébastien Bras’ famous restaurant is just one example. The Soulages Museum in Rodez which is less than an hour away, is also a must-see.
