Our opinion

Who would believe that the Mayragues castle was actually a survivor? It now looks so tall and powerful with its strong medieval features that it is hard to fathom. Saved from ruin and obliteration by over 30 years of restoration, it now stands resplendent at the top of its hill, watching over its vines. It is a story of perseverance and alliance. Here, in the heart of the Gaillac vineyards, said to be the oldest in France, heritage is preserved and cultivated - both the vineyards and the buildings. A beautiful harmony that guests can discover from the top of the "medieval balcony" – the ancient corbelled walkway – while enjoying a glass of wine from the estate...A very pleasant prospect.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

A chance trip, love at first sight of the region’s landscapes, then the desire and challenge to take up winegrowing, and finally the surprise of discovering this completely atypical fortified house which, despite its ruined state, hid some unsuspected treasures.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

An authentic medieval structure crowned by a rare corbelled parapet walk on which we were able to open the guest rooms with beautiful interior decoration that still survives. A typical Languedoc dovecote on top of columns stands beside it.

What is its history ?

According to excavations, the foundations date back to the 12th century. Originally, the castle was a fortified house protecting the small valley and the old communication route that it overlooks. It had its heyday with the Tonnac family, who acquired it in 1609 and held on to it until 1875. It was this family who designed the fireplaces and painted ceilings. Following the sale of the castle by auction, it was used solely for agricultural purposes by a series of successive owners, until it fell into complete disrepair and we acquired it in 1980. This was followed by 35 years of work, which was started by volunteers. It was listed as a Historic Monument in 1960; It was awarded the Grand Prix des VMF (Old French Houses prize) in 1998.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

A stay in a castle listed as a Historic Monument, surrounded by 70 hectares of fields, meadows, woods, groves and a wine estate with the Gaillac appellation, comprising 12 hectares of vines cultivated biodynamically since 1999. Guest rooms located in the gallery/walkway on the second floor of the 12th-century medieval castle. Authentic decor, a warm welcome, a delicious breakfast and classical music concerts in summer. Our winery is open to visitors, who can taste and buy our wines here.

Places you would personally recommend

Hikes in the Grésigne forest, which holds a thousand secrets from prehistory to the time of Louis XIV, with memories of glassmakers, a unique biodiversity and the little Notre-Dame du Désert chapel in Mespel, a magical place. The picturesque Vère valley is dotted with hilltop villages such as Castelnau de Montmiral, Puycelsi, Larroque with its caves and Bruniquel, one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France". Les “croquants de Cordes”, a local treat, biscuits made from egg whites, sugar and almonds. "Le Jardin des Lys" in Puycelsi, for delicious home cooking and the chance to watch an unforgettable sunset over the Grésigne forest. "Le Moulin de Varen" on the banks of the Aveyron, for its exquisite cuisine. The classical music concerts organised every year at Château de Mayragues.
