Our opinion

In the heart of the Pays d'Auge, a Normandy picture postcard where rolling green hills and valleys stretch as far as the eye can see, this old farmhouse has changed a great deal since it was built at the end of the 19th century. While it has retained its geometric brick exterior, the interior has been transformed into a luminous, calm and harmonious cocoon. It retains a strong bond with the surrounding countryside, which the owners have transformed into a small equestrian kingdom. Here, people and horses enjoy the same attention, and everything has been designed to ensure the well-being of each and every individual. For horse-riding enthusiasts and anyone else, there is no doubt that this place is a foretaste of paradise.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

One of us is originally from the Pays d'Auge and grew up near here. Roots and childhood memories therefore played an undeniable part in our choice. We were first lucky enough to be able to acquire the neighbouring property - where we now live - in 2019 and then this former farmhouse and its five hectares of meadowland in 2022. We wanted to create a place focused around horses, with the centrepiece being the rider's house. Three years later, after some major works, our project and our dream became a reality. We are both equally attached to this region. This unspoilt place makes us feel happy, it anchors you... and it is a real paradise for horses and those who love them.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The house layout is typical of small farmhouses in the region. It is a manageable sized building, even if its façade makes it seem rather grand, with its brickwork enhanced by black glazed bricks. This gives it a false air of being a little mansion. We were careful to preserve its simple character, but inside we wanted to create a contemporary, light-filled, friendly place.

What is its history ?

When we bought it in 2022, the house was a 19th-century sleeping beauty, surrounded by half-timbered or breeze-block farm buildings threatening to fall into ruin (which, incidentally, have since carried out their threat, but have been replaced by even better constructions). Part of the ground floor was still clay, and the last works were carried out in the 1980s. There was much to be done. For us, its history began when we bought it - it was a real blank slate. We kept the walls, floors, roof and staircase. We have lovingly restored everything else. Each window looks out onto a postcard-perfect view. All of this in the heart of nature, in a protected, secure environment.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

We turned this building, with its ideal proportions for a stay with family or friends, into a "rider's house". It is a place redesigned by our architectural agency and furnished with our own furniture collections - Delcourt Collection and Collection Particulière. The house overlooks five hectares of paddocks. There is an eight-stall barn, 20 metres from the house where our guests can keep their horses or spend time with ours. The 60 x 40 metre arena for dressage and jumping enthusiasts is found a little further on. We work with qualified instructors who teach all levels and offer tailor-made holidays for riders. We could mention the beauty of the apple trees in blossom or the maple leaves in the autumn, the atmosphere this place offers for contemplation, or more practically, the immediate proximity of the Lisieux train station, just 15 minutes away!

Places you would personally recommend

Our two must-try restaurants are the "Parnell" in Cambremer, an inventive and delicious village bistro, with a remarkable local cider menu, and "l'Ordonnance" in Lisieux, a restaurant, wine bar and cheese shop, and also the ideal place to enjoy a coffee on the terrace after the Saturday morning market. Also in Lisieux: “La Marine” fishmonger's, Alexandre Massu's butcher's, “Maison Barbet” bakery and not forgetting the “Mérimée” chocolate shop, which is on a par with Parisian chocolatiers! Readers can visit the "Les Grands Chemins" bookshop or the "Seconde Culture" resource centre. For Sunday bargain hunters, a visit to the "Brocante House" in Livarot is a must. For walkers, we offer access to our adjoining private forest of over 40 hectares.
