A 19th-century villa in the heart
of a village to the west of Milan

Our opinion

From the church square, you can see the villa's mansard roofs and the dovecote tower that dominates it behind the walls framing the garden and inner courtyards. The entrance is in an unassuming alleyway that gives nothing away about the grand residence standing in the heart of the village. The building comes as a surprise as you pass through the gate. The elegance of the yellow ochre façades, perfectly punctuated by the terracotta decorations and dark green shutters, hinting at the interiors: a veritable journey to the Italy loved by so many, elegantly combining the soft tones of the terracotta tiles with those of the decorative paintwork, plasterwork and woodwork. The carefully chosen furnishings add an old-fashioned touch that is enhanced by contemporary elements with their clean, graphic lines. This beautiful harmony is sure to make your stay here a happy and soothing one and at just an hour from Milan.

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

In the 80s, our family, which was originally from Milan, wanted to escape the city and find a refuge in the middle of nature, in a place that was timeless but easily accessible. this house has become our family's country retreat in this quiet corner of northern Italy, in the heart of the Lombardy countryside, 50 minutes from Milan.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

The property comprises a main villa of around 1000 m² spread over three floors. Several outbuildings surround and enclose the property, which has two courtyards and a lush garden. The exterior architecture of the château is typical of the region and the period it was built in. It is an imposing building overlooked by a remarkable dovecote. The "piano nobile", the ground floor, is dedicated to daily life, meals and entertainment. A succession of five rooms unfolds in sequences, revealing original frescoes alongside contemporary works of art, sculptures and installations, creating a harmonious dialogue between history and art. The ballroom is particularly refined and the main bedrooms have retained much of their original woodwork. The second floor houses a majestic studio with parquet flooring and an abundance of natural light, highlighting the exposed beams. The architecture is designed to make the most of the open spaces, creating a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere.

What is its history ?

It is a Lombard château built in around 1800 by Professor Sacchi, the "personal doctor" of Princess Margherita di Savoia. My father-in-law, the artist Filippo Panseca, made this place the centre of his creativity. In the early 1970s, long before digital art became a movement, he began using technologies such as the computer - then inaccessible to the general public - for his art. Throughout his career, he created giant biodegradable spheres that symbolised both technological progress and ecological awareness, encouraging people to think about pollution and sustainability long before these issues became global concerns. An artist, humanist, inventor and writer, he was always ahead of his time and was deeply involved in the contemporary art scene. 2000 m2 of outbuildings will house his archives and be open to the public. In addition to conservation, the site will invite contemporary artists and creative minds to ensure that artistic creation remains at the heart of our identity.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

We offer you the opportunity to stay in an authentic Lombardy château and to enjoy an intimate, aesthetic experience deeply rooted in the real Italy in the heart of a peaceful village. We open our doors to like-minded souls. We thrive on the human interaction that comes with hospitality. The house is bathed in silence, history and light. We come here to slow down, breathe and to enjoy a simpler, more beautiful way of life. In our family, art is an institution, a way of thinking and living, so our collection of artworks, design objects and family archives is an integral part of the experience. Borgo Sant'Angelo is both a house and a "live in a museum experience". Here, art and life converge, and each guest becomes an integral part of the ongoing story. It's a place where people come to find inspiration and celebrate creative beauty. We also offer a discreet, made-to-measure service.

Places you would personally recommend

Visit one of the many family-run restaurants in Mortara, the “Ristorante Torino”, or the “Salumeria Guarnaschelli” for fresh ravioli. Near Moncalvo, "Locanda del Sant'Uffizio" run by Enrico Bartolini, a connoisseur of Piedmontese cuisine. At Palazzo Dal 600' in Casa Cassano, "Rosignano Monferrato”, run by a group of young chefs. In Vercelli, the antique markets, "Antic Art Antichita" run by Tosi Maria and Barlafus. Local markets in Mortara on Fridays, Robbio on Tuesdays and Vigevano on Wednesdays and Saturdays. In Vigevano, you can visit the Leonardo da Vinci "Leonardiana" museum, the Piazza Ducale and take a walk along the River Po through the serene countryside. The reflections of sunset and dawn on the submerged rice fields of La Lomellina - a rice-growing region - are a sublime sight in spring.
