Not far from the village known as "Balcon de la Serrania", the old cortijo, all in white, dominates a vast mountainous landscape. Here, in keeping with the Andalusian architectural tradition, life is organised around a patio, bordered by a gallery, a precious refuge during the hottest hours of the day. Formerly a place of agricultural activity, time now passes peacefully in a setting where old materials, varied and sometimes mischievous objects and furnishings, and an array of soft, cheerful colours intermingle. The inside and outside are all part of the same space, where people can move around naturally at different times of the day and depending on their wishes. A boutique hotel with the feel of a family home, Cortijo Genesis is sure to meet the expectations of those with an open mind to the world and to nature.
Our story is the shared dream of a family who, living in the hustle and bustle of modern life, aspired to live more intensely and closer to nature. We left our native Belgium because we felt the urgent need to put down roots and have the presence of horses for my work as an equine therapist, and the land needed for my husband's permaculture projects. After years of searching around the world, we ended up in Andalusia in the small village of Gaucin. The house was surrounded by lush nature and the view was exceptional. The strong emotion we felt after just a few minutes signalled to us that we had "arrived at our destination".
The rural essence of Andalusia is reflected in one of its most emblematic architectural buildings: the Cortijo, the Andalusian farmhouse. It is a snow-white house. Lime is used to reflect the sun's rays and keep the house cool. Its appearance is dictated by the region's warm climate. Thick stone walls keep it cool on hot days, and a virtually flat roof with a terrace (asotea) lets you enjoy the cool evening air and starry skies. The patio is the heart of the house, where you can hide from the hot sun, enjoy the murmur of the fountain and the green plants.
The cortijos were at the heart of Andalusian agricultural production. The cortijo's spaces were adapted to facilitate farming, livestock rearing and the production of essential goods such as oil, wine and cheese. They housed both the owners and the workers who lived there permanently or temporarily during the harvest seasons, and also had a social dimension. As well as being a place of work, they were the centre of family reunions and traditional celebrations, such as harvest festivals, weddings and local festivities. The cortijo was therefore a place where work and personal life coexisted. We acquired the Cortijo in 2024 and spent a year restoring it, preserving its soul and architectural authenticity.
We offer our guests the opportunity to stay in a traditional Andalusian farmhouse that we live in and share as a family home. We've created areas dedicated to permaculture, where plants, animals and people coexist in harmony. The garden, cultivated ecologically, is home to fruit, vegetables and aromatic herbs, and is extended by a beekeeping project where bees freely pollinate the plants and produce honey. We have created meditation areas in the heart of the garden, ideal for relaxation and well-being, and offer Reiki sessions, massages and equine therapy sessions, by prior arrangement, in an unspoilt natural environment.
In Gaucín, "Azulete" serves fresh Mediterranean cuisine, made with local and organic produce and a selection of mainly Spanish organic and natural wines. "Platero & Co" has created the concept of Nouvelle Cuisine Rustique and is listed in the Michelin Guide with a Bib Gourmand, which rewards a difficult combination: a very high standard of cuisine, with real attention paid to products and execution, at an affordable price. Enjoy an al fresco meal on its private terrace, with the Guadiaro Valley and Sierra de Grazalema in the background. "Espacio Sánchez Zabaleta” is an art gallery dedicated to the contemporary work of the artist of the same name, who mainly paints objects, abandoned places and the outskirts of towns.
