Our opinion

Could it be the relationship between the Duchy of Burgundy and the city of Florence in the 15th century that inspired this house with its Palladian shape in the heart of the city of Autun a few centuries later? Although the theory is a little far-fetched, the fact remains that this architecture, which has enjoyed great renown, has found its place in a city whose history goes back 2000 years. Halfway between the Roman Theatre and Saint-Lazare Cathedral, the Maison Constant and its extensive grounds form a green oasis in the heart of the city. Welcomed by a majestic sequoia tree in front of the main entrance gate, guests will find a warm and cozy family home, with a touch of old-fashioned charm. The recently modernised entrance lodges offer additional, independent accommodation. Just two hours from Paris, this is a great opportunity to discover the capital of the ancient county of Burgundy.

Property owners’ take the floor

Why did you settle in this region, in this place and not elsewhere ?

We chose to buy a family home in this excellent wine-growing region because of our passion for Burgundy wine. Our aim was to find a house with character in an atypical location, which, for us city dwellers, combined a large green space while still being in the city. The advantage of this property is that we benefit from one hectare of grounds right in the centre of Autun. From our very first visit, we imagined that this venue would be ideal for hosting large family celebrations and get-togethers with friends, as well as allowing our guests to discover Burgundy in a privileged setting.

What specific architectural features does your building have ?

Its exterior and interior architecture appears to have been inspired by 19th-century neo-Palladian houses. The residence is preceded by a long wrought-iron gate framed by lodges, opening onto landscaped drives. A giant sequoia, a rockery and two statues of goddesses add to the theatricality of your arrival. The square-shaped house has a hipped roof. The entrance facade features a portico with fluted columns and Tuscan capitals, topped by a balcony adorned with a decorative balustrade. The rendered facades feature a regular arrangement of French-style cross-windows, moulded lintels, ashlar quoins and a cornice decorated with an attic band. The interior layout is based on Palladian principles, with a cruciform square plan arranged around a central staircase. The rooms are located at all four corners, offering excellent panoramic views. On the ground floor, the vestibule opens onto reception rooms with period decorations: moulded ceilings, marble chequerboard floors, parquet flooring, marble fireplaces, wood panelling, moulded doors and decorated metalwork.

What is its history ?

The land was used for arquebus games in the 18th century and then became the grounds of an adjoining property. Around 1850, its owner sold the grounds to his son Alexandre Constant, a banker by profession, who built the mansion at its centre. The grounds, with its paths, copses and flowerbeds, demonstrates his passion for botany. The property then belonged to the Count and Countess de Prunelé, who lived there for almost 50 years until the Countess's death in the 1950s. Their family solicitor, handled the estate and bought the house. We bought the property in 2023.

What can you offer people staying with you ?

Just two hours by train from Paris, we offer our guests the unique advantage of one hectare of grounds right in the centre of Autun, creating a feeling of being in the countryside in a real bubble of greenery away from the hustle and bustle of the city, while taking advantage of the city's attractions and the fact that all the shops are just a two-minute walk away. We offer a soothing, private environment. The grounds are filled with remarkable trees, of particular interest to botany and forest lovers. In this unspoilt setting, the environment invites you to relax and discover: lazing around the pool, reading in the shade of the remarkable trees or on the private terrace, as well as doing sports on the footpaths and cycle routes through the Morvan mountains.
